KEYS TO UNDERSTANDING

  • "Circumcised believers"  (or those of the circumcision") -- Jewish believers.  Descendants of Abraham who were under God's covenant of circumcision were God's special people until Jesus came and gave a new covenant for all nations.  It was difficult for Jews to accept that uncircumcised Gentiles were their equals before God simply because the they believed in Jesus.  This problem continued to plague Gentile churches.   Antioch:  A city approximately 300 miles north of Jerusalem.  After Rome and Alexandria it was the most important city in the Roman Empire.  The church in that city was the first predominately Gentile church.

CONTENTS OF THE CHAPTER
The miracles of chapter 10 convinced Peter that he should preach to the Gentiles and that they were to be baptized and accepted in the church on the basis of their faith in Jesus.  The Jewish church in Jerusalem, however, had not seen those miracles and questioned Peter about his conduct.
Peter recounted the events that led to his preaching to Cornelius.  When he reported the fact that the Gentiles were baptized in the Holy Spirit just as the apostles had been, the Jewish brethren were convinced.
When word of the conversion of Gentiles was spread, some of those who had been scattered by the persecution in Jerusalem began preaching to Greeks as well as to Jews.  A great church made up mainly of Gentiles was thus founded in Antioch.  The Jerusalem church sent Barnabas to encourage them and he went to Tarsus to get Saul to help him.  In       Antioch disciples were first called Christians.
When a world-wide famine was predicted, Christians in Antioch sent relief to brethren in Judea by Barnabas and Saul.
