KEYS TO UNDERSTANDING

  • Pentecost was one of the three feast days observed by Jews. They came to Jerusalem from many parts of the world for these feasts. This particular Pentecost was 50 days after the Passover when Jesus was crucified.
  • "The third hour of the day" was 9:00 a.m.

CONTENTS OF THE CHAPTER
The chapter begins with the apostles' baptism with the Holy Spirit.  This enabled the apostles to speak in languages they had not learned.  When visitors from Jerusalem could not understand how the apostles could do this,   Peter explained that it was the work of the Holy Spirit whom God had promised through the prophet Joel, a writer of the Old Testament.
After getting their attention, Peter preached to them about the resurrection of Jesus. He proved it by prophecy, by the eye-witness testimony of the apostles and by the gift of the Holy Spirit which Jesus had poured out from heaven. Those who believed him asked what to do and 3,000 were baptized. They united for worship and work under the teaching of the apostles. They were the church which Jesus had promised to build (Matt.16:18).
